In recent times, there's been an increasing debate within the climbing community about the grades of rock climbs. Some argue that with the invention of knee pads and better beta, certain routes have become significantly easier than they were in the past. Others claim that the collective consciousness of climbers has elevated their skills to a point where every benchmark Moonboard problem can be successfully sent.

The issue at hand is not a new one, but it's gaining momentum thanks to the rapid progress being made by top climbers. Headlines like '3-year-old becomes youngest climber to send 9a' and 'Newest V17 in Colorado sees its first barefoot ascent' are becoming more common. It's undeniable that climbing has become more accessible, and some argue that this ease of access is leading to a devaluation of the sport.

On one hand, it's natural for humans to adapt and improve over time. The invention of new gear, training methods, and techniques has undoubtedly made climbing easier than it was in the past. However, this raises questions about the legitimacy of climbing grades. Are they still accurate representations of the difficulty involved in completing a route? Or have they become outdated relics of a bygone era?

On the other hand, some climbers are quick to point out that progress is not solely responsible for the perceived ease of climbing. Better beta, training regimens, and nutritional knowledge have all contributed to an overall increase in performance across the board.

So, should we start downgrading everything? The answer ultimately lies with individual climbers and their experiences on the wall. For some, like myself, climbing remains a daunting challenge that requires dedication and perseverance. However, for others, it seems that the sport has become too easy, too fast.

To stay ahead of the curve and continue to push the boundaries of human achievement, we need to redefine what constitutes difficulty in climbing. Perhaps it's time to revisit our grading systems and acknowledge the incredible progress being made by top climbers. Or maybe it's simply a matter of embracing the evolution of the sport and recognizing that, yes, climbing has become easier – but that doesn't mean it's lost its value or excitement.
